Greetings from GLN’s office!
First, in light of the International Women’s Day 2008, which was celebrated last Saturday, March 8th, I would like to share my deepest appreciation for all the women of the world. As life givers and caretakers of our human family, women need to be honored, appreciated, and empowered if we really want to build healthy communities. All community issues are womens’ issues, but there are some that are of special interest of women, such as childcare, violence against women, equal pay, etc. I invite you to visit the following websites and get informed about the International Women’s Day and how you can get involved locally and globally in supporting women empowerment:
Marin Abused Women Services: http://www.maws.org/
Marin Women’s Commission: http://www.co.marin.ca.us/depts/bs/main/brdscomm/WomensCommission/wmnscom.cfm
International Women’s Day: http://www.un.org/events/women/iwd/2008/

I also use this opportunity to share with you information sent by our friend Cory, The Volunteers Coordinator for the City of San Rafael, about activities taking place in our community to commemmorate “Our Mother Earth Day”. Earth and Women are life givers and need to be cared and honored. Join us and hundreds of community members in acting locally to take care of our Mother Earth on April 19th – and everyday.
Have a wonderful week!
In solidarity for peace and justice,
Ericka
Hello!
Earth Day is upon us. In San Rafael we’re planning for a big event at Pickleweed Park on April 19, 2008 from 10am-3pm.
It will include a community/park/shoreline cleanup (10am-noon) and an eco fair (noon-3pm) in multiple languages featuring live music, puppet shows, a ride ‘n’ seek bicycle treasure hunt, prizes, food, booths, etc.
San Rafael Clean would like YOU to participate. We’ll make it easy for you. Just respond to this email and tell us what you are interested in as well as how best to reach you (phone, email, letter – and the number or address to contact). We’ll contact you and set up something that works for you and the event. Just let us know if you wish to:
Volunteer to help plan or market the event (post flyers, send emails, make calls, contact press, or attend planning meetings)
Volunteer at the event (help with the morning cleanup, event set up, booth staff, food and beverages, stage hand, etc.)
Sponsor a booth or activity (a little money goes a long way at a volunteer driven event. $200-500 can really make a difference and spice up the event!)
Donate a prize for the cleanup contest (gift certificate, product, food, craft, etc.)
Host a booth or activity with an eco theme (do you work at, volunteer at, or support an environmental organization that should be at this event? Help get them involved!)
Other – maybe you have some thoughts about how you or your business, family or service group can get involved not listed above. The more the merrier! Let’s put our heads together and make this a stellar event!
No matter what, I know you are committed to the environment. If you would even just come to the event or tell a few friends it would help.
Please pass this email along to anyone you think should know. Here is a link with more information: http://www.sanrafaelvolunteers.org/one_earth_day.htm
Please help us keep San Rafael Clean. Thank you for your time and consideration.
In friendship,
Cory
